Thats right! Fall Shmall!! It's the year of summer and I for one choose to live in complete denial (and would you expect any less of me?!). But for real, who needs fall colour when you can have palm trees and tropical happiness. I know, I know, many people have romanticized visions of fall leaves, sweaters, scarves and all things comfy cozy. I like cozy too, but don't palm trees give you the same warm fuzzies deep down in your soul!?
Echeverias have taken on some new colour. Check out the slightly pinkish tinge around the edges. Thats autumn colour Louis style.
Or how about the way yucca 'bright star' gets slightly pinkish on the tips after a few chilly evenings. This is a change I can accept.
And then there are those treasures that don't need any change. They provide all the happiness one could dream of just the way they are! Again, fall shmall!!!
But I decided early on that autumn is an acceptable term for the changes that occur this time of year. Grasses are showing the glory of a long season of sunshine. And in that way, autumn becomes the culmination of the happiness of summer.
And with that, I feel it entirely appropriate to enjoy all the summer loving happy plants that reflect my love of warmth and sunshine.
Brugmansia is still growing strong. I love the glowing foliage.
With the exception of some leaves and sad hostas, it's actually hard to tell what season we are in. Some people might think it sad, but to me, there is one to celebrate - any guess what that might be?
And in the pursuit of foliar happiness I discovered this amazing flush on my scheffster. It's almost ghostly!!!
These echeverias are soon to be lifted from the outside world. Container shopping was a success and so I will be sure to give some updates in the next while.
So happy fall shmall year of summer foliar happiness follow-up! For more head on over to Pam's epic blog Digging.
Today I was outside in the garden for hours in the sunshine...summer style!
ReplyDeleteSo jealous of your Yucca 'bright star' mine have never ever looked as good. And that Schefflera really is swoon worthy!!! Lovin summer 2.0 in your garden...
Today was a surprise. It was much nicer than I expected. We were mainly overcast but did get some stellar rays throughout the day. I stopped looking at the forecast because they were speaking too much gloom last weekend.
ReplyDeleteI'm sad your bright stars have not been as happy. It kind if makes me worried that I fluked out so far. I'm hoping for a drier spring next time around. I think that was hard on much of our plants. How does your margaritaville yucca do in the wet? I want to order some but dread the yucca spots.
Long live summer!!!!!
Now those are some spunky, funky, spiky plants you got going on in your palmy goodness garden Louis! LOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooove!
ReplyDeleteThanks!! Spiky goodness warms my heart. And in October I need all the warming I can get!!!!
DeleteI'm glad that you are not one of those winter loving raindrop huggers! Your garden really looks great! I hope that someday my palms will look as good as yours!
ReplyDeleteI don't do very well with rain at all!!! I like it when it rains over night. It can water the gardens and keep things lush but by no means interfere with me enjoying the splendours of the great outdoors. I think maybe my distain of rain and cold stems from my hatred of being inside. In my world, it would always be warm enough to comfortably wear the lightest t-shirt, shorts and flip flops - even at night! I have equated that to mean that everything under about 75-80F is too cold. So instead I buy those hand and foot warmers in bulk boxes, drink tea/coffee all day and scrunch myself into the fetal position.
DeleteI wish you much palm growing success and happiness!!!! They will in no time I'm sure! I'm always shocked at how much they grow each year. BTW - I feed them with palm fertilizer from early spring to august/sept ish depending on the weather.
I love that you are fighting the onset of fall with all your might! Denial, denial, denial! My garden and I are both happy that we got some rain recently, but I do think the last couple of days have been an amazing gift! I've been outside both days working in the garden, and loved it. I sweat at the drop of a hat -- pretty much as soon as the temp hits 45 -- so I like the coolth for working outside.
ReplyDeletehaha I always have much denial going on! As I am typing to you the sunshine is gloriously breaking through the clouds. I take it as a glimmer of hope. It is the year of summer after all.
DeleteAh, Louis, you need to live in Texas, where fall is about 20 minutes long, winter is about 10, spring is 15, and summer is nearly eternal. :-) Cool and rainy is what I live for after the long, hot summer, but I can see why, in your region, you'd say, "Fall shmall!" Isn't it interesting to see how different all our gardening regions are, and our responses to them? I love to read about your palm-growing adventures in the Pacific NW. Thanks for joining in again for Foliage Follow-Up!
ReplyDeleteCould you imagine my palm jungle in Texas?! And there would be muchos danger!
